ART 100 - Visual Communication (3)

Introduction to basic visual communication in a variety of media formats. Study includes the perceptual, psychological and design aspects of visual communication. The course involves the student in the analysis, developmental design, and execution of visual presentations. Offered annually.

ART 101 - Drawing I (3)

Introductory studies in general drawing. Object drawings, life, still figure and expressional composition, and experimentation. All media. Field trips and outside sketching. Offered annually.

ART 102 - Design: Two-Dimensional (3)

Explores the fundamentals of 2-dimensional spatial organization and the use of the elements of 2-D design (line, shape, value, color, texture, space) as they relate to fine and applied arts. Experience with a variety of materials, concepts and processes, including computer applications. Offered annually.

Introduction to the general techniques and uses of oil painting. Exploration of visual painting problems and ideas. Outside assignments and field trips. Offered annually.

Introduction to photography; understanding the camera, exposure, lighting and photographic composition. In a series of assigned problems, the student will learn to use the light sensitive materials of the medium. Students must have an adjustable camera. Offered annually.

A thematic introduction to the visual arts, literature, and music of South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Far East, with some parallels drawn to the Islamic cultures of West Asia. Readings and core visual documents are posted on a Web site and students are encouraged to search for collateral materials elsewhere on the WorldWideWeb. Multimedia class presentations are supplemented with field trips which may include visits to the Art Institute of Chicago and to the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, Lemont. Offered annually. ART 118 - Drawing & Painting From Nature (3)

In this introductory level course the theme of nature is used to explore basic drawing and painting principles such as line, space, value, color, texture, perspective, balance and repetition. Weather permitting, students will work both outside and in the studios, sketching on site and from memory. Imagery derived from 147Mother Nature148 will provide a focus, expanding each participant146s awareness of the environment and themselves.

Introduction to graphic design emphasizing the elements and principles of visual communication as applied to print formats. Consideration of type, image, and space are presented in a series of studio projects. Hand-rendered and computer-generated approaches to the design process are included. Offered annually.

In the classroom we examine the artworks in a historical context, considering the issues of who makes art and why it is made. Prerequisite: Art 101. Drawing Workshop is a course designed to enhance the basic skills developed in Drawing I. Students will experiment with a variety of drawing tools and techniques, encouraging them to develop drawing as a form of personal expression. Majors and non-majors alike will benefit from the problem-solving emphasis which allows for personal solutions. Offered annually.

ART 202 - Design: Three-Dimensional (3)

Explores the fundamental organization of 3-D objects and spaces, considering both formal and functional aspects of design, through the planning and creation of scale model objects, theater set designs, toys, and seating devices. Experience with a variety of materials, concepts and processes will be explored. Offered annually.

ART 203 - Book As Art & Design (3)

Explores traditional and non-traditional book formats with an emphasis on the design of the page, and sequentially developed ideas. Various hand-binding methods are demonstrated; printing options for text and image span a spectrum from hand-rendering to computer generation.

ART 205 - Painting II (3)

Prerequisite: ART 105. Continuation and expansion of Painting I problems. More opportunity for concentration on individual development. Outside assignments and field trips.

ART 206 - Watercolor Painting (3)

Prerequisite: ART 101 or consent. Exploration of the techniques and methods of watercolor painting.

ART 207 - Collage: Altern. Expressions (3)

A cross-cultural study of designer/artists of the African Diaspora and the Americas, primarily women, with special attention to their influence on 20th-century Modern Art movements. Textiles, tribal and populist arts will be the focus of slide lectures. Hands-on collage project assignments will encourage creative response. Cross Ref: WMSTU 207

ART 208 - Ceramics: Hand Construction (3)

Hand construction techniques emphasizing 'three-dimensional drawing', construction of sculptural forms, concept realization, and creative personal invention. Appropriate surface design treatments, ceramic glazing and firing methods will be presented.

ART 209 - Figure Drawing I (3)

Prerequisite: ART 101. Exploration based on the figure (all media). Emphasis on form, expressive content, and composition. Offered annually.

ART 210 - Printmaking: Silksc/Lithogr (3)

Prerequisite: ART 101 or 102, or consent. An introduction to stencil and planographic printmaking techniques in the form of silkscreen and stone lithography processes. Emphasis upon the development of the student146s technical understanding of each process and the visual and conceptual relationship of image to media.

ART 211 - Typography (3)

This course develops an aesthetic and organizational sensitivity to type. Emphasis on formal visual principles (structure, form, weight, texture, size, color and direction) is applied in exercises that require both hand-rendering and computer-generated letterforms.

ART 212 - Digital/Darkroom (3)

Prerequisite: ART 112 or consent. Experimental and thematic photographic work will incorporate all aspects of photography, including digital and darkroom manipulations. Creativity and advanced visual awareness are the main goals of this course, as well as a complete understanding of the craft of photography in silver-based and digital media.

ART 213 - Selected Topics in Film (3)

Each semester offering will probe the relationships and continuities between film and the related arts - aesthetics, criticism, adaptation, genre.

ART 215 - Sculpture: Modeling/Casting (3)

Clay modeling from still life and figure. Mold making and plaster casting generated from clay models. Emphasis is placed on the development of design and construction skills, concept realization, and creative personal invention.

ART 216 - Computer Graphics (3)

Prerequisite: Any previous Art course or consent of instructor. Introduction to the graphics capabilities of personal computers. While most graphics applications are now cross-platform, the class is conducted in a Macintosh laboratory using applications such as Quark and Illustrator. Practical computer-based solutions to design problems are emphasized to allow students to gain experience in a wide variety of contexts.

ART 217 - History of Film (3)

An historic survey of the major technical, artistic and economic influences on the creation of film up to the mid-20th century. Extensive screening and discussion provide opportunity to study original materials.

ART 219 - Digital Imagery (3)

Digital image manipulation including computer photo enhancement, computer generated animation and design. Concentrating instruction in Adobe PhotoShop, this course will use Scanners, PhotoCD, and a Service Bureau. Macintosh experience is required.

ART 220 - Graphic Design II (3)

Prerequisite: ART 120 or equivalent. A series of sequential visual communication projects challenge the student to further refine visual thinking and extend basic graphic design concepts into formal and practical commercial applications. A variety of software programs such as Illustrator and PhotoShop are integrated with hand-rendering projects. Offered annually.

ART 221 - Ancient/Medieval Art (3)

Prerequisite: ENGL 102 or equivalent. An historical survey of art from the Prehistoric through Gothic periods. Attention is concentrated upon the painting, sculpture and architecture of the West, but the arts of non-Western cultures are also introduced. Slide-illustrated lectures are supplemented with field trips to the Oriental Institute and Field Museum.

ART 222 - Art of the Renaissance (3)

Prerequisite: ENGL 102 or equivalent. A survey of European Art from the 14th to the 18th century. Theoretical formulations, particularly contrasts between the stylistic modes of the Renaissance and Baroque, are tested by first-hand evaluations of masterpieces in the Art Institute of Chicago. Offered annually.

ART 223 - 19th and 20th Century Art (3)

A survey of European and American Art from the Neo-Classicism and Romanticism in the early 19th century through Post-Modernism and other contemporary developments. Efforts are made to integrate the class lectures with current exhibitions at the Art Institute, Museum of Contemporary Art, Terra Museum of American Art and the commercial galleries. Offered annually.

ART 224 - Contemporary Cinema (3)

Examination of major national film achievements since 1946, through screenings, lectures, and discussions of major directors, national periods of achievement, and national industry characteristics.

ART 226 - Chicago Architecture & Design (3)

An in-depth look at Chicago146s celebrated architecture and the individuals who shaped its legacy. Chronological range is from the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 through the 1980s, with special focus on the sky scraper boom with both corporate and residential examples. Site visits and field trips included with some out of class time required.

ART 228 - Design: Hist/Inspiration (3)

This course will trace the development of modern graphic design and its inter-relatedness to architectural, industrial, interior and craft design, as well as modern painting and sculpture, through a chronological survey of 20th Century styles. Students will develop their own design sensibilities through experiential design projects.

ART 229 - Printmaking:Relief & Intaglio (3)

Prerequisite: ART 101 or 102, or consent. An introduction to relief and intaglio printmaking techniques in the form of woodcut, linoleum block, etching, aquatint and soft ground processes. This exploration of Asian cultures as manifest in the Chicago area is a distance-learning experience on two levels: 1)all readings, discussion, testing and writing assignments are conducted only via the Internet; in lieu of classroom sessions, five field trips entail shared experiences in Chinatown, at a Hindu temple, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Japanese Garden, Glencoe, and a live or cinematic theater event.

An applied introduction to principles governing effective coordination of text with images for the Internet. Color theory, the zone system of exposure, advanced portraiture, lighting, view camera use, and experimental techniques will be included. A wide variety of techniques used in advertising and commercial art will be presented from conceptualization to audience consumption. Discussion of processes, methods of application, and marketing theory for static and electronic media will explore the role of the advertising agency in the marketing mix: how the agency creative department works in the development and execution of creative advertising solutions. An introduction to the arts of architecture, book illumination, ceramics, metalwork and carpets from Spain, North Africa, Middle East and South Asia. Stress is placed on the Islamic world146s strategic role in the cultural exchange between East and West.

This digital production course offers students a range of experiences with the techniques and tools for developing artwork for computer animation and interactive media.
